Bravington Road
Our Bravington road project embodies a lot of the practice’s core principles. The design works to enhance the quality of life for its inhabitants, a challenging budget was maximised to make these changes affordable and the key design philosophies of reuse and improvement were at the heart of everything we did. Located in the London borough of Westminster, this Victorian terraced property had been subdivided into individual apartments during its history. The client’s home comprises the ground floor, including the garden to the rear. A non original outrigger adds to the available space within the floorplan however it still felt quite cramped. The client had begun working from home on a more regular basis and lacked a dedicated working area, this resulted in a desire to extend the outrigger to be full width. Making as minimal impact on the building as possible we looked to create a new side extension. This addition reused the existing structure of the outrigger and introduced a minimal amount of new elements to the build in a bid to keep costs down. We pushed the outrigger to the boundary and formed a new structure using timber framing. This helped to keep on budget as well as generally being our preferred method of construction due to its more sustainable benefits over traditional masonry. This new intervention created additional internal room for a reconfigured kitchen and created a new office for the client. We wholeheartedly believe that making improvements to your home should be achievable without needing to spend a fortune. As a result one of the most exciting elements of this project for us is the wrap over rooflight that floods the new extension with natural light. In our mind this is a great example of carefully conceived architectural projects being affordable and available to everyone whilst still creating good quality design solutions.
